The Truth About Credit Counseling Agencies

Credit counseling agencies promise to consolidate your debt, lower your rates, and get you on a payment plan. Some do exactly that. Others are wolves in nonprofit clothing.

The difference matters. The wrong agency can cost you thousands and leave your credit worse.

What legitimate credit counseling looks like

A real agency will:

  • Review your full financial situation for free
  • Explain all options, including bankruptcy
  • Offer a debt management plan (DMP) with lower rates
  • Be accredited by the NFCC or FCAA
  • Charge reasonable fees (often $0-$75 setup, $0-$50/month)

A DMP is not a loan. You pay the agency, and they pay your creditors. The rates are often reduced. The fees should be transparent.

The red flags

Red flagWhat it means
"Stop paying your creditors"They may be a debt settlement company, not a counseling agency
Upfront fees before servicesIllegal for debt relief services under federal law
"Guaranteed" resultsNo one can guarantee what creditors will accept
No NFCC/FCAA accreditationLegitimate agencies are usually accredited
Pressure to sign todayThey want the sale, not your best outcome
New bank account you don't controlCommon in shady operations

Debt management vs. debt settlement

Credit counseling is usually the former. If the agency sounds like the latter, walk away.

The honest read

Good credit counseling is a real tool. It can lower your rates, simplify payments, and keep you from defaulting. But the industry has enough bad actors that you need to verify before you trust.

Check accreditation. Ask about fees. Get everything in writing. And remember: if they tell you to stop paying your creditors, they're not counseling — they're selling a settlement.
