Why You Shouldn't Co-Sign a Loan (Even for Someone You Love)

Co-signing feels like helping. It is actually a legal agreement to be the backup payer on a debt you didn't choose.

If the primary borrower misses a payment, the lender comes to you. If they default, you owe the full balance. Your credit gets hit. Your debt-to-income ratio goes up. And your relationship gets strained.

What co-signing really means

When you co-sign, you are not vouching for someone. You are promising to pay if they don't.

RiskConsequence
Missed paymentAppears on your credit report
DefaultYou owe the full remaining balance
Late feesYou owe those too
CollectionsYou can be sued and garnished
RelationshipMoney becomes the center of everything

The lender required a co-signer because the primary borrower was not creditworthy enough. That is a signal you should take seriously.

The alternatives that actually help

Instead ofDo this
Co-signing a car loanHelp them buy a cheaper car with cash
Co-signing an apartmentGive them a short-term loan with a written contract
Co-signing a student loanHelp them fill out FAFSA, find scholarships, or choose a cheaper school
Co-signing a credit cardDon't do this. Ever.

If you want to help, give a gift, offer advice, or provide a short-term loan you can afford to lose. Don't put your name on their debt.

The honest read

You are not a bad person for saying no to co-signing. The bank already said no to lending them money without you. You are allowed to agree with the bank.

The people who love you will find another way. If they pressure you into co-signing, that's more evidence that you shouldn't do it.
